Campos de "británicos", 1880-1920
Elsa María Barbería (1952-1996)
has written the definitive work on the allocation of public lands in Santa
Cruz Territory during the first 40 years of its development. Her text "Los
dueños
de la tierra en la Patagonia austral, 1880 - 1920" is
a rich source of information on the process and its prominent players, both individuals
and companies. In the 145-page Appendix, the author provides an exhaustive
index of land-holdings, organized geographically.
This web page includes all
lands where the holder was British, or the name "sounds" British (in
general, the text does not identify nationalities). In the case of ranching
companies, the criterion applied is majority British participation; details
of ownership, often complex, are excluded. Many names were hispanicized in
the original records, and some spelling errors have been corrected (further
corections are welcome.)
Elsa María Barberia (1952-1996) escribió "Los
dueños de la tierra en la Patagonia austral, 1880 - 1920",
considerado el
mejor texto sobre la entrega de tierras públicas en el Territorio de
Santa Cruz durante sus primeros 40 años de desarrollo. Su libro es
una excelente fuente de información acerca del proceso y de sus actores,
tanto personas como sociedades. El Apéndice (de 145 páginas) tiene una lista
completa de los destinatarios de los campos, organizada por zona.
Para esta página web, se han seleccionado
los productores británicos, y aquellos cuyos nombres "suenan
anglo" (por lo general, el libro no identifica la nacionalidad de las personas).
Para las empresas ganaderas, se incluyeron aquéllas que tenían participación
británica mayoritaria; los detalles de los socios, muchas veces complejos,
no se presentan. Se han corregido algunos nombres ingleses que estaban mal
registrados (se agradecen otras clarificaciones).

individuals are presented first, followed by company holdings (when applicable).
The name suffix "(h)" indicates
a son with the same name as his father. When available, the year of settlement
is shown; otherwise the following column contains "A"
for before 1914, "D" for after 1914. The final
column specifies Owner (Propietario), Renter (Arrendatario)
or Occupant (Ocupante). An additional table gives the names of those
who transferred lands.
