Introduction  

Puerto Natales municipal cemetery was established about 5 years after the founding of the city (1911). Previously, burials were performed on Isla Krüger, in the nearby Fiordo Eberhard. Located east of the town centre, at the top of Calle Esmeralda, the walled grounds of the cemetery are now completely occupied by mausoleums, tombs and grave sites (there is a new cemetery on the southern outskirts of town). Neatly trimmed evergreen trees provide visual interest, and shelter from the occasional shower. Opening hours (2003) are daily, 8am to 6pm. [Unlike Punta Arenas, there is no "British Section" in this cemetery.]

The burials show distinctive features of the local culture, regardless of the national origin of the deceased. Typical of these are the many inscriptions worked in relief on attractive pewter plaques, sometimes with a calendar and clock-face showing the date and "fatal hour". Many others display portraits / photographs, or an occasional treasured object. The overall effect is ome of strongly-felt emotion, in contrast to the stark rows of upright stones found in a traditional British graveyard. 		Presentación  

El cementerio municipal de Puerto Natales fue establecido más o menos 5 años después de la fundación de la ciudad misma (1911). Anteriormente, los entierros se realizaban en la Isla Krüger, ubicada en el cercano Fiordo Eberhard. El amurallado cementerio está ubicado por el lado este de la ciudad, arriba en la Calle Esmeralda. Actualmente, se encuentra lleno de mausoleos, tumbas y nichos (hay un "nuevo cementerio" en el límite urbano austral). Unos árboles siempreverdes, bien podados, agregan un toque de interés y proporcionan refugio ocasional contra el mal tiempo. Horario (2003): todos los días, de 8h a 18h. [Distincto de Punta Arenas, no hay "Sección Inglesa" en este cementerio.]

Las sepulturas son características de la cultura local, independiente de la ascendencia étnica del difunto. Un ejemplo típico son las inscripciones labradas en atractivas placas de peltre, a veces con un calendario y un reloj mostrando el día y "hora fatal". En un gran número de tumbas se despliegan objetos recordatorios y retratos (o fotografías). El impacto general es de una fuerte expresión emotiva, muy diferente de las severas filas de lápidas, tradicionales en los cementerios británicos.

Some Remarks on "British" Names
 
(a)  Since birthplace is seldom stated in the inscriptions, some names have been excluded from the list on more subjective grounds: for example, "not sounding British". On the other hand, some of the names that have been included may, in fact, not be of British descent. Not having researched these families in depth, I apologize for any mistakes -- accuracy should improve over time.
 
(b)  This is probably not a complete list of British burials in the Cemetery. For example, some graves have no identifying information; and other persons may have been interred with relatives, without a corresponding inscription. 		Nota sobre nombres "británicos"
 
(a)  Pocas veces aparece en las lápidas el lugar de nacimiento. Se han omitido algunos apellidos por razones relativamente subjetivas (como ser: "no suenan ingleses"). Por otra parte, algunos de los nombres incluidos pueden no ser británicos. Pido disculpas por cualquier error cometido. La precisión mejorará con el tiempo.
