William HALLIDAY

b. 1845 Johnston, Dumfries-shire; son of John HALLIDAY, sailor, & Margaret GILLESPIE; childhood in Dumfries; 1865 to Falklands [Malvinas], sailing from Sunderland, employed by F.I.C. as shepherd on 20-year contract; 1885 sailed with EBERHARD on "Rippling Wave", explored area of Gallegos estuary, rented government land at Hill Station, then moved with family (plus father-in-law William MACCALL); bought first sheep at Ea. San Gregorio; joined by Jack RUDD, constructed first buildings; 1888 sold first wool-clip to British merchants; 1903 parents travelled to Scotland with 4 children to finish their schooling - all bar son James returned within a year; 1909 handed over management of Hill Station to son John; d. 1917 British Hospital, Buenos Aires; bur. Hill Station
